Take a good look at this picture from NewsChopper4. It is the destroyed baby stroller struck by 72 year old Donna Marie Higgens.
Donna hit the stroller which held a 15 month old child as well as a 15 year old girl who was pushing it. She hit them with her SUV IN THE CROSSWALK. Look again at the picture. She hit them so hard, the crosswalk does not appear in the frame.
Donna hit them and kept going. Fortunately, other drivers managed to block her vehicle without being harmed and Hawthorne Police arrived to arrest her for felony hit and run and felony drunk driving. The baby was in grave condition and had to be whisked away to ICU. The girl has leg injuries. More charges could follow depending on the true extent of the victims’ injuries.
The drivers who blocked the SUV made a very brave and potentially dangerous move, literally placing themselves in harm’s way. It is hard to recommend such behavior, but thank goodness they did it and thank goodness Donna did not hit anyone else.
Note that crosswalks do not protect you from drunk drivers. You have the right of way, but an impaired person may not see it that way. In fact, they may not see you at all.
